The AI Analyst Workflow: From Question to Shippable Analysis
The easiest way to waste AI at work is to use it randomly.
One prompt for SQL. Another for a chart. Another for a summary. Then another because the first answer was weird. Eventually you have twelve chat tabs and no idea which output you trusted.
Put AI inside the workflow
A useful analyst workflow is simple: Triage → Build → Validate → Communicate. AI can participate in every stage, but the human responsibility changes at each one.
1. Triage
Before touching SQL, clarify the business question. What metric? What population? What time period? What decision will the analysis support?
AI is useful here for turning a vague request into a list of questions and missing definitions. It should not invent those definitions for you.
2. Build
Give AI a specification before asking for SQL. Include tables, grain, joins, filters, metric definitions and expected output.
For example: “I need weekly active users by acquisition channel. The user table is one row per user. Events are one row per event. Count a user once per week. Exclude internal accounts.”
3. Validate
Run the query. Check row counts. Check duplicates. Compare totals with a known source. Test edge cases. Then ask AI to challenge the logic.
4. Communicate
A good analysis does not end with a table. Turn the result into a decision: what happened, why it matters, what you recommend and what remains uncertain.
Charts need a question too
Do not ask AI, “What chart should I use?” without context.
Use a simple sequence: Question → Comparison → Chart → Annotation → Takeaway.
If the question is whether retention differs between two cohorts, the chart should make that comparison obvious. The annotation should explain the important movement. The takeaway should state what the reader should do with it.
The point is not more prompts
The point is fewer random handoffs between your brain, your SQL editor, your dashboard and the chatbot.
The AI Analyst Workflow turns ANCHOR into a practical daily operating pattern for SQL, exploratory analysis, charts and reports.
